Great Lakes Restoration Initiative
Through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), we have been able to continue our management of priority invasive species throughout Marquette County. This initiative was established in 2010 to put the Great Lakes on the map as a top priority area of the United States, both economically and ecologically. The initiative is being implemented by various governmental agencies in cooperation with smaller communities. Through this initiative, we were able to apply in partnership with L2L CISMA to both the United States Forest Service, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency, to complete projects starting in 2015, with two-year funding. This funding provided an opportunity to have smaller work crews throughout the field season, many of whom were our volunteer interns in previous years! These crews worked throughout a four-county area in the U.P., and worked on National Forestland, as well as on public land throughout the counties. We have applied for this funding again to continue work on future projects.
